Swiss Lathe Mandatory: Standard turned/drawn bars (h11 tolerance, Ra >1.0μm) will cause guide bushing seizure and tool chatter on Swiss lathes. Centerless grinding is NOT optional—it's a functional requirement.

01 Why Centerless Grinding Is Mandatory

02 The Bushing-Chatter-BUE Failure Cascade

Guide Bushing Vibration → Tool Chatter → BUE Formation

In Swiss lathe operations, the rod passes through a precision guide bushing positioned near the cutting tool. Any surface irregularity (Ra >1.0μm) or ovality (>0.01mm) creates harmonic vibration at spindle speeds >3000 RPM. This vibration generates heat at the tool-workpiece interface, accelerating Built-Up Edge (BUE) formation and catastrophic tool failure. Centerless ground rods eliminate this failure mode.
